October Annual Sales
Look for deals on Halloween items after Oct. 31 such as candy, costumes, decorations.  Expect drastic discounts.
Typical annual sales: Early sales on fall and winter clothing, fishing gear, school supplies, women’s coats, clearance on any lingering items from the previous season.
Major purchases typically on sale: October: Appliances, new cars from current year model after new model introduction of next year’s models (NMI) and furniture.
Travel: October is a great time to go to Florida when it is often a good bargain and less crowded.
Fruits and vegetables: apples, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, chard, cranberries, escarole, grapes, green peppers, lima beans, parsley, pears, pumpkins, rutabagas, winter squash, tomatoes, turnips. With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are freshest. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, taste better tastier and that money may be going to area farmers and staying within the local community.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Since 2010 Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving weekly tips from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points and Learning Tools, 3-year-olds:
*  PRACTICING playing with other children,
    Preschooler begins to
    –  wait her turn,
    –  practice manners,
    –  practice sharing,
    –  practice cooperating,
    –  practice being a friend.
    (social/emotional, life skills, language/vocabulary,
     thinking/learning)
*  IMAGINATIVE play starts to develop.
    –  Clothing items for real-life pretending:
          .. Dad’s and Mom’s short sleeved tops,
          .. flat grownup shoes,
.. costume jewelry necklaces or kid-made jewelry
             (big beads on shoelaces),
          .. adult-sized baseball caps
    –  Keep costume items in an accessible cupboard,
drawer or box; cleanup will be easy.
    –  Imaginative/dramatic/fantasy play props:
.. a blanket draped over a sofa or chair can
              become a castle, a cave.
.. a cardboard box can become a car, a rocket.
.. household utensils and tools (considering
safety, of course) mimic grownups in the
              kitchen and garage workshop.
          .. Halloween-type costumes; a cape can create a
              superhero!
    –  Ask, “Tell me about…” (your castle, the monster,
          your car, your friend, etc.)
    –  Don’t discourage imaginary friends.
(tactile, visual, auditory, gross and fine motor,
     social/emotional, creativity, life skills,
     language/vocabulary, math/logic, abstract thinking)
*  PLAY IS a child’s work!
Q: What do we mean by Developmental Skills?
A: (in no special order) tactile, visual, auditory, gross
and fine motor, social/emotional, creativity, life skills,
    language and vocabulary, math/logic
    (thinking/learning) and music.
