Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Since 2010 Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving weekly tips from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 24- to 30-month-olds:
*  SENSORY learning with clay or play dough (store-
    bought or DIY)
    –  provides early pre-math and pre-science skills.
    –  “tools” with supervision:
          .. rolling pin,
          .. cookie cutters (not metal),
          .. spoons,
          .. straws,
          .. a garlic press.
    –  Manipulate with supervision:
          .. squeeze and squish,
          .. pound,
          .. poke,
          .. roll.
          (tactile, visual, fine and gross motor, language 
           and vocabulary, math/logic)
*  BEGIN to sort, classify and count (pre-math and 
    pre-science) using everyday objects.
    –  Use “describing” words often –
          .. big, small/little.
          .. distance/direction words:
                    *  up, down.
                    *  close/near, far.
                    *  in, out.
          .. basic color words:
                    *  primary (red, yellow, blue).
