Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
9- to 12-month-old SKILL DEVELOPMENT discussion:
*  BABY’S problem-solving skills are improving.
    – He’ll take the lid off a clear container to get the toy
      he sees inside rather than trying to reach through
      the lid. (tactile, visual, thinking/learning)
    –  Using tape or contact paper or velcro, stick toys
      to a hard floor, and let her figure out how to pull
      the items off (and you re-stick for more fun).
      (tactile, visual, fine/gross motor, thinking/learning)
*  HE’S excited about the freedom of movement and
    mobility on all 4s or on 2 feet, so
    –  place objects just out of reach, and encourage
      Baby to retrieve them. (visual, fine/gross motor,
      thinking/learning)
    –  make an obstacle course out of chairs, couches,
      large boxes and draped blankets. (tactile, visual,
      gross/fine motor, thinking/learning)
*  Q: What do we mean by Developmental Skills?
    A: (in no special order) tactile, visual, auditory, gross
    and fine motor, social/emotional, creativity, life skills,
    language and vocabulary, math/logic
    (thinking/learning) and music.
*  BEGIN to build a “learning library” of “developmental
    learning tools” designed to grow as Baby grows:
    –  consider choosing toys (Learning Tools) with
      multiple features and developmental skill
      elements that stimulate Baby AND (your future)
      Toddler AND Preschooler;
    –  ex. Baby may stack 2 blocks at 6 mo, and make
      structural creations with lots of blocks later.
