JANUARY Annual Sales
Most people know about after-Christmas-sales with savings of 50%-90% on cards, decorations and candies. Keep cards in a box with a small freshener and they will look brand new next year. In addition look for substantial discounts on items that were hot sellers at Christmas time such as winter clothing, cookware, kitchen gadgets, housewares, rugs and toys. You may find these on the closeout shelves.
TYPICAL JANUARY ANNUAL SALES: Annual white sales; stock up on linens, sheets and towels.
MAJOR PURCHASES TYPICALLY ON SALE in January:  Appliances, furniture.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: avocados, broccoli, cabbage, celery, collards, endive, grapefruit, kale, oranges, rutabagas, tangerines, winter squash. NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really fresh. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, taste better and that money may be going to local farmers.

Consumer Affairs launched a 3-minute video explaining how cord blood is collected, processed and stored
Most expectant parents have at least heard of cord blood banking, but many of them have no idea how the collection process actually works. The video really helps clear up some confusion about cord blood banking and could be a great addition to an article with your thoughts on the topic. Cord blood can only be collected at birth, that’s why it’s important to do your research well before your baby’s due date. Watch https://vimeo.com/132466366 to learn how the process works.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
BIRTH to 3 mo. SKILL DEVELOPMENT discussion:
*  Q: What do we mean by Developmental Skills?
A: (in no special order) tactile, visual, auditory, gross
and fine motor, social/emotional, creativity, life skills,
    language and vocabulary, math/logic
    (thinking/learning) and music.
*  BEGIN to build a “learning library” of “developmental
learning tools” designed to grow as Baby grows:
    –  consider choosing toys (learning tools) with multiple
features and developmental skill elements that
stimulate   Baby AND (your future) Toddler AND
      Preschooler.
..  ex. 2 blocks can be stacked at 6 months old,
and structural creations with lots of blocks can
          be built later.
*  BEFORE Baby learns to grasp objects or sit up, she
will most appreciate things she can look at and listen
    to, so consider
      –  mobiles (developmental skills – visual, auditory,
            social/emotional, thinking/learning)
          ..  high contrast colors.
..  creatures positioned so Baby ISN’T looking at
            feet or stomachs.
..  since he naturally looks right, position a
mobile out of reach about 14″ from his eyes
so that Baby looks directionally to the right.
      –  sensory toys (tactile, auditory, visual, gross motor)
          ..  soft textures
          ..  bright colors
..  objects that crinkle, tweet, rattle, squeak.
