Winter Clothing Drive
Please help keep our kids warm and cozy this winter! Open your closets and drawers instead of your purses and wallets. In collaboration with “Cami’s Clozet and Drew’s Drawers,” a Winter Clothing Drive will be held to collect clean and gently-used cold-weather clothing – coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, scarves, and gloves. They will gladly accept anything your kids have outgrown and pass it on to deserving campers. All sizes and styles are appreciated. Of course, if you need to make that end-of-the-year charitable donation, they promise to put that to good use as well! Donated clothing items can be dropped off on Sunday, December 6th from 1-4pm at Cheviot Hills Recreation Center-2551 Motor Ave, LA 90064 OR Lake Balboa Park-6300 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys 91316.

Your Jr. Chef can bake whole onions
Wait… aren’t onions used just for ingredients in sauces and salads and mirepois, laying a crunchy slice on your burger and for battering/deep-frying? Sure, but don’t overlook the simplest cooked onion there is: baked whole onions. Cut the root off a whole UNpeeled med-lg onion so it stands up, cut the top off to expose 1 – 2″ of the meat, put in a baking pan, drizzle with a tasty olive oil, sprinkle with s&p. Bake 425˚ about 1 hr (depending on size of onions) until tender and skin is dark and dry protecting the tender insides. Scoop out the onion meat, season (s&p, butter, crème fraîche, balsamic/cherry vinegar, freshly julienned basil, fresh thyme leaves, chopped tarragon, crumbled bleu cheese, milk goat cheese, etc.) and serve OR serve whole and scoop at the table. Serving suggestions: simply as a side dish, good with steak, make onion bruschetta, add to hummus and grain salads. Parental supervision.
