Honey and Sesame Comfort Bread

An Indian “bread” of high-protein dough that can be served hot for breakfast or an after-school snack. Mix chickpea flour (aka gram flour or besan) with ww flour, add water to form a pliable dough, rest for 30 min, then with a rolling pin make four ¼” rounds. Cook on a lightly greased, non-stick griddle or heavy pan 2-3 min each side. Brush with honey, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, and serve. Vegetarian. Notes: for vegan, can sub coconut oil for clarified butter and alt sweeteners for honey; recipe can be doubled; dough rounds can be refrigerated for a while in plastic wrap until ready to cook; hot dough rounds can be a platform for many savory toppings, too.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“MATH/LOGIC” developmental skill definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Math/Logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development: water, sand, objects that can be taken apart and put back together, toys involving problem-solving, games, clay, objects involving counting forward and backward, toys with various shapes/colors/sizes, blocks, puzzles, objects that can be matched/classified/categorized, objects that nest.

MORE PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities, 5-year-olds:

* POINT OUT and discuss similarities and differences

in the world around you, for example, clothing:

solid colors, patterns, function, weight, texture,

    appearance, length.

* THE 2nd LEVEL of complexity is finding articles of

    clothing with 2 features:

.. clothing that is BOTH blue AND striped,

.. clothing with tv/movie characters that is worn in

              warm weather,

.. clothing that is white worn on the feet.

* THE 3rd LEVEL is to ask Preschooler/Kindergartener

    for 3 features:

.. clothing that is green AND striped AND you put

              your legs into,

.. clothing that is red AND has short (or long)

sleeves AND you wear to bed.

Upcoming – Math/Logic, pt. 13
