Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” developmental skill definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Math/Logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development: water, sand, objects that can be taken apart and put back together, toys involving problem-solving, games, clay, objects involving counting forward and backward, toys with various shapes/colors/sizes, blocks, puzzles, objects that can be matched/classified/categorized, objects that nest.
PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities for 4-year-olds:
*  IDENTIFY numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in everyday life by
.. counting everything in sight like flowers, steps,
cookies, soda cans, plastic soda caps, spoons, etc.
.. Next put all the white soda caps together, then the
green ones, then the red ones, etc.
.. Look at sizes and types of everyday objects like
spoons (teaspoons, soup spoons, kitchen spoons)
or socks (by color, pattern, dad’s, etc.).
*  PLAY with canned goods on a safe floor (carpeted?).
    .. Make stacks of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
.. Stack them like bricks, balancing 1 on 2.
.. “What shapes can you build?”
    .. Careful:
            – little fingers handling heavy cans.
            – don’t use empty cans… sharp edges can cut!
*  USE numbers and shapes in conversation – the more
description, the greater the brain development; during
    a snack, say
.. “Here are 2 round yellow      crackers.”
.. “Can you stack 4 blue square blocks?”
.. “Do you think those 2 fluffy white puppies are
        coming over here?”
