New Moms: Are you Building your Support Community?
The life of a new parent is filled with so many emotions and challenges, and it’s so important to have a support network of other parents going through similar experiences at the same time. Many Moms have found that a properly led Mommy & Me program that discusses developmentally relevant topics at the right time in your baby’s life can be a life changer. The Pump Station is home to many Mommy & Me groups with babies of the same age, and they help hundreds of new families every month. In these groups, led by licensed family therapists, parents can share and better understand these early times, and they bring a philosophy of mindful parenting and a focus on taking care of both baby and mom. Whether your baby has just arrived, or she’s 10 months old, groups of similar ages are available for you to join. They encourage you to build your support network wherever you can, and invite you to consider them.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” developmental skill definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Math/Logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development: water, sand, objects that can be taken apart and put back together, toys involving problem-solving, games, clay, objects involving counting forward and backward, toys with various shapes/colors/sizes, blocks, puzzles, objects that can be matched/classified/categorized, objects that nest.
SOME PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities, 6 – 12 months:
*  FROM 6 MONTHS,
    .. encourage grasping
          – soft blocks
          – toys with “handles”
          – plastic rings
          – cloth books.
.. utilizing Baby’s natural arm movements, encourage
experimenting with sounds using spoons and plastic
          lids.
.. stack small objects into large ones, including objects
          that purposefully “nest.”
.. keep things in containers that he can fill and dump.
          – Most of the time YOU will have to fill it, but the
process of dumping over and over is a way he
learns about what he is able to do with objects.
*  FROM 9 MONTHS, play “up and down.”
.. You stack spools, blocks or plastic cups “up” and
          knock them “down.”
.. Let her help, even if knocking down is more fun.
.. Keep repeating, explaining your actions.
.. Eventually she’ll understand “up” and “down.”
