Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” developmental skill definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Math/Logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development: water, sand, objects that can be taken apart and put back together, toys involving problem-solving, games, clay, objects involving counting forward and backward, toys with various shapes/colors/sizes, blocks, puzzles, objects that can be matched/classified/categorized, objects that nest.
Some general MATH/LOGIC tidbits:
*  MOBILES for infants offer discoveries of
.. cause and effect: touch and it moves.
.. “object permanence” (it’s still there when you look at
it again) which develops later into Baby knowing
Mom will be back when she leaves the room.
*  LOGICAL thinking develops when children are faced
          with “manageable surprises” like
.. open-ended toys that have many possible outcomes.
.. games and activities that use logic skills like lotto or
          dominoes.
*  KINESTHETIC learners naturally develop the
math/logic part of the brain through movement like
    .. jumping, hopping, dancing
    .. pounding, digging, pouring
    .. throwing, kicking
    .. stacking, balancing
    .. drawing, painting.
