Pesto at the ready to serve over pasta or vegetables
Make fresh basil pesto (process basil, olive oil, pine nuts/walnuts/cashews/blanched almonds, garlic, cheeses, salt/pepper, butter; keeps about a week in fridge), store frozen (up to 2 mo) in flattened (air out) Ziploc freezer bag, and break off pieces as needed. Makes 2+ C pesto. Notes: since a little goes a long way, consider mellowing basil pesto out by subbing half the basil with fresh baby spinach leaves; make pesto lower-fat by switching some of the olive oil with ricotta cheese..
Winter greens pesto: greens, nuts, cheese, oil, garlic, lemon juice, salt/pepper whizzed in blender/food processor. Consider using other leafy greens like kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, collards, rapini, arugula, etc. Use pesto on crostini, as a sandwich spread, accompaniment to roasted meats, fish. Comments at the bottom are worth checking out.

So? What to do?
Fact A: under stress and threat, our (early man’s) reptilian brain (which we all have) shuts down our brain’s frontal lobe (executive function; logical thinking; making life work). Fact B: tests/exams in school are perceived by the reptilian brain as “threat,” so, fact C: in our schools, we “test” kids under the worst possible stressful conditions. Listen to Sugita Mitra’s TED talk, 22 minutes, where he proposes a “school in the cloud.”
SOLE, the global experiment in self-organized learning, brings spontaneity, chaos, imagination and creativity.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for MUSIC development is 3 – 10 years. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing MUSIC experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for MUSICAL development: rattles and other toys for making rhythmic sounds, any objects that create gentle/rhythmic/musical sounds, toys that jingle/squeak/chirp/click/snap/ring, singing toys, play phones, musical instruments, any technology that plays music.
Some “MUSIC” tidbits for the 5th year:
*  TO musical beats quick and slow, encourage
    Kindergartener to
    .. jump.
    .. hop.
    .. skip.
    .. dance.
    .. tiptoe.
    .. march.
*  TO encourage body coordination and a sense of
    balance,
    .. teach dancing.
    .. jump rope to music.
*  SUPPORT performing a “concert” using real and
    unconventional instruments like
.. an empty oatmeal canisters and wooden spoons.
.. maracas (real) or taped-up box with dried beans
or a lidded yogurt container taped closed with
          a few coins inside.
.. metal coffee cans and old (not sharp) silverware.
.. toy musical instruments (i.e. piano, xylophone,
          bells, baby rattles).
