Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

THE CRITICAL WINDOWS during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for MUSIC development is 3 – 10 years. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing MUSIC experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for MUSICAL development: rattles and other toys for making rhythmic sounds, any objects that create gentle/rhythmic sounds, toys that jingle/squeak/chirp/click/snap/ring, singing toys, play phones, musical instruments, any technology that plays music.

Some “MUSIC” tidbits. From newborn:

*  for healthy brain development, gentle, melodic

sounds are better than throbbing, pulsing bass.

*  music supports bonding –

.. dance with Baby to a lively tune.

.. snuggle in for a love song.

.. sing songs softly often, and

            watch for a response.

*  gently, play different types of music

.. at different times of day.

.. considering various styles, rhythms, tempos,

            and beats.

*  keep volume low since an infant’s hearing can

be damaged by loud music with high decibels.

*  tell your pediatrician if Baby seems extra-sensitive

      to loud sounds or noises.

Upcoming – “Music, pt. 5”
