Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“CREATIVITY” involves imagination, ingenuity, invention/originality, creative thinking, dramatic/visual/musical arts.

THE “CRITICAL WINDOW” during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for CREATIVITY is 1 – 4 years with lifelong expression. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Creative experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

FORMS of creativity include 2- and 3-Dimensional ART, Written/Spoken LANGUAGE, MOVEMENT / MUSIC using the body, Imaginative-Pretending FANTASY.

Some general “Creativity: LANGUAGE” tidbits:

FROM 24 months

…since Toddler’s talking more, you’ll be listening more to the stories he makes up about the pictures you show him.

…she enjoys rhymes and repetition.. repetition.. repetition.

…play games with words + actions like

“hug and kiss,”

“whisper and scream,”

“jump and run,”

“wave and clap,”

“kick and hop,”

making “happy and sad” faces.

…when you read stories about family roles, relationships and feelings, he’ll model his own made-up stories after what you’ve exposed him to.

Next week – “Creativity: LANGUAGE, pt. 3”

Your Jr. Chef can roast acorn squash

The fluted shape of a seeded acorn squash halved at the equator is so decorative, and it’s its own dish with melted butter (alt fat okay) and brown sugar (alt sweetener okay) in the well, just waiting for that first sweet, butter-coated bite. Half of a small squash can be 1 serving. Cut acorn squash in half, scrape out seeds, butter/s&p/sugar in upturned squash cavity, bake 45 min – 1 hr. Skin is edible. Consider roasting the seeds (pepitas). Parental supervision.
