Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“CREATIVITY” involves imagination, ingenuity, invention/originality, creative thinking, dramatic/visual/musical arts.

THE “CRITICAL WINDOW” during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for CREATIVITY is 1 – 4 years with lifelong expression. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Creative experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

FORMS of creativity: 2- and 3-Dimensional ART, Written/Spoken LANGUAGE, MOVEMENT / MUSIC using the body, Imaginative-Pretending FANTASY.

Some general CREATIVITY: ART tidbits:

* FROM 18 months,

..visual and tactile sensory material (paint, play dough, crayons, chalk) encourages eye-hand coordination and supports color-awareness.

..let him scribble and mix colors.

..supervise so he knows the APPROVED place for art – guide him AWAY from walls, sheets, the floor.

* WATER IS fascinating – bathtub play:

..pour and splash with plastic cups and scoops.

..experience what bath sponges can do.

..use a brush on bath tiles with watercolors or ‘shaving cream bath paint’ (Google DIY).

..finger-paint in the bath followed by a real bath.

..watch what happens when she chases around a colored ice cube (food coloring) in the tub. Good for “pink day” or “blue day” or “yellow day.” (It’s harder to get real foods in those natural colors for “color days.”)

..no matter how much water is in the tub, always stay with him.

JANUARY Annual Sales

Most people know about after-Christmas-sales with savings of 50%-90% on cards, decorations and candies. Keep cards in a box with a small freshener and they will look brand new next year. In addition look for substantial discounts on items that were hot sellers at Christmas time such as winter clothing, cookware, kitchen gadgets, housewares, rugs and toys. You may find these on the closeout shelves.

TYPICAL JANUARY ANNUAL SALES: Annual white sales; stock up on linens, sheets and towels.

MAJOR PURCHASES TYPICALLY ON SALE in January:  Appliances, furniture.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: avocados, broccoli, cabbage, celery, collards, endive, grapefruit, kale, oranges, rutabagas, tangerines, winter squash. NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really fresh. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, taste better and that money may be going to local farmers.

What Your Family Needs to Know About Cord Blood Storage

Over the past decade over 1/3 of all life saving transplants have used Umbilical cord cells instead of using bone marrow. Cord Blood has many benefits over bone marrow transplants and that is why today there are over 30,000 life saving transplants, when five years ago the number was 8000. The evidence is in, cord blood saves lives. However, why is there such a difference in cost? Are the biggest companies better than specialized laboratories? Is the extra cost worth it? Are you just paying for super sized marketing from the big commercial companies? For more information, email cindy@myCordBank.com or call (818) 984-8085. Cindy can help every expectant family make an informed decision.

Jenna & Kate Bath Boutique

In May of 2014 two sisters, ages 9 and 12 years old, were looking for ideas of something to do over the summer and make some money to go to Disneyland. Since sisters don’t always agree on everything, it was very exciting when they both screamed “Bath Bombs!” as their decision. By July they were in 3 small stores and started a Facebook page. They use all natural and organic ingredients and scent each product with pure essential oils. Every item is handmade by them personally. Today they have added bath salts, hand & body scrub, soaps and their very popular lip balms with matching edible lip scrubs to their product line. All orders there are directed through their Etsy page. Everything is GREAT!
