Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly since 2010.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“LIFE SKILLS” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION:  personal care, responsibility, self-reliance, invention, resourcefulness, ingenuity.

THE “CRITICAL WINDOW” during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LIFE SKILLS begins at birth. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing visual experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

SOME Life Skills tidbits:

*  DURING the day, name items of clothing and their colors (an especially good activity while folding the laundry), like, “Here is (are)

    ..your red pants.”

    ..Daddy’s pink shirt.”

    ..Brother’s 4 grey socks.”

    ..Baby’s soft yellow blanket.”

*  SUPPORT Toddler mimicking what you do (age-appropriately, of course):

..give him a pretend or child-sized vacuum when you vacuum.

..give her child-sized or regular-sized plastic dishes and wooden utensils (that she takes in and out of “her own” low cupboard or drawer) during adult activity in the kitchen.

..let him push a child-sized cart at the grocery store.

..give her a child-sized scoop or hand trowel when you’re weeding or planting.

Next week – “Creativity, Pt. 1”

Easy DIY crayons from broken pieces

Fun fun family activity. Good recycling lesson.

On the stovetop. 4-color, stackable.

http://www.momtastic.com/diy/106744-diy-make-your-own-rainbow-crayons/

In the oven. Multi-colored (unless you color-sort crayon pieces), uses muffin tin/foil or disposable muffin tins.

http://betterinbulk.net/2011/01/melting-crayons-give-new-life-to-broken-crayons.html

Notes: for a point on round disc crayons, break in half. If using silicone molds, they may not be good for food again, so dedicate for crayon-making. Some crayons just may not melt. After poured, wax hardens quickly. Don’t mix random melted colors – you may get murky brown. Don’t use cooking spray on molds – crayons may be greasy. Taking off crayon paper is most annoying part – try soaking in hot water for a while. Some crayon shapes from silicone molds: jigsaw puzzle pieces, madeleine shapes, loaf pan pieces (make ½” slab then break up). Check Ikea or Target for molds.
