NOVEMBER Annual Sales

Put fresh batteries in your smoke detectors.  Reuse old batteries from those detectors in other devices such as a TV remote control. These old batteries will run for a long time; you just should not trust your life to year-old batteries.

Do all Christmas shopping by Thanksgiving. You can get better deals before the hectic days of Dec. and you will avoid the crowds.

Turkeys are often inexpensive.  Buy several and freeze.

Check all doors, windows for drafts.  Clean your furnace and change filters.  This is a good time to clean windows so they let in more light and even clean light bulbs, lamp shades and light fixtures so that you get the maximum light.

You also might consider putting long-lasting and efficient fluorescent bulbs in dark hallways and stairways and leaving them on most of the evening.  The energy cost will be minimal and the light will help prevent falls and accidents in these accident prone areas.

Tune your car before winter starts.  Do a winter automobile check up.  Get antifreeze early; the price always goes up in the winter.

TYPICAL ANNUAL SALES: Shoes, boys clothing, blankets.

MAJOR PURCHASES TYPICALLY ON SALE: Appliances, used cars.

TRAVEL: November is a great time to go to Florida when it is often a good bargain and less crowded.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: apples, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cranberries, endive, grapefruit, grapes, lima beans, mushrooms, parsley, rutabagas, winter squash, turnips.  NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really fresh.  Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, taste better and that money may be going to local farmers.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly since 2010.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“LIFE SKILLS” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION:  personal care, responsibility, self-reliance, invention, resourcefulness, ingenuity.

THE “CRITICAL WINDOW” during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LIFE SKILLS begins at birth. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing visual experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

SOME Life Skills tidbits:

*  AS YOU carry on daily chores,

..talk about objects around the house.

..show him different uses for the same thing –

..dig with a spoon, eat with a spoon.

..drink from a container, pour from a container.

*  IN THE CAR, point out things like

    ..trees

    ..houses

    ..people walking dogs

    ..cars

    ..big trucks

    ..stop signs.

*  NAME things that are

..the same/different – sock pair shapes/forks and spoons

..bigger/smaller – the size of grownups’ shirts and toddler shirts

    ..hot/cold – the sun in summer/ice cubes

    ..tall/short – a big tree/most bushes

    ..high/low – the sky/the ground

..moving/still – running then coming to a stop

..light/dark – when the lights are on or off

    ..noisy/quiet, etc. – cheers at a ball game/everyone’s bedtime

Firefly Star Wars Ready Go Brush

Firefly developed this brush not just to celebrate the forthcoming new Star Wars movie and the timeless appeal of this entertainment franchise, but also to put the fun factor back in the chore of oral care. As you will see, Darth Vader and Yoda lend plenty of force to the FireFly Ready Go Brush, which features a light-up timer that mimics the cycle of a traffic light and makes sure kids brush long enough – one minute on uppers and one minute on lowers. Green signals go, yellow signals halfway done, and red means you’re finished! It’s so colorful & fun to use that kids will want to brush, no nagging from parents required. It also has a suction cup holder so it can be stored upright on the counter for less clutter & better hygiene.
