Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly since 2010.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“VISUAL” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: seeing, distinguishing images, focusing on stimuli, tracking images, remembering images, looking at items sequentially, forming mental images.

THE ‘CRITICAL WINDOW’ during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for VISUAL  ACUITY is birth – 6 months, and BINOCULAR VISION is 1 – 3 years.  The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing visual experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

SOME GENERAL Visual tidbits:

*  WITH NEWBORN brain wiring, Baby’s clearest vision up to 3 months is peripheral.

*  BY 1 or 2 months, both eyes will focus (work together) on a single object 10″ – 15″ away.

*  Depth perception development comes later.

* Movement and high-contrast patterns (light vs. dark, white vs. black) are seen most easily.

Next week – “Visual,” Pt. 5
