Because no child is ordinary, every child deserves an extraordinary education

Does your child have passions or goals that are not being addressed in school? Is your child an actor or entertainer who requires a teacher around his/her schedule? Is your child an athlete who trains daily and would benefit from a tailor-made educational program and schedule? EMA provides education management for children ages 4 – 18, including tutoring & mentoring. They start with your child’s goals, create an educational plan aligned to those goals, then find and manage the resources needed to bring that plan to life. For information, call 818-522-4482 or visit www.educationmanagementagency.com.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“AUDITORY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: distinguishing similarities and differences between sounds, integrating hearing with the act of listening, remembering the order of sounds, learning verbal communication.

THE ‘CRITICAL WINDOW’ during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for the “AUDITORY” sense is from prenatal.  The more opportunity children have for positive “Auditory” (sound) experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for the Auditory sense that offer “sound texture” in addition to the human voice:

*  rattles

*  musical mobiles

*  toys and objects that squeak, jingle, crackle, chirp, click, snap, ring, pop

*  activity centers

*  song from voice and/or instrument(s)

*  musical instruments

*  nature sounds like rain, wind, beach waves, thunder

*  common animal sounds from cats, dogs, birds, etc.

*  “white noise”

*  books on tape, CDs, etc.

*  instructional software

Next week – “Auditory,” Pt. 2

Life in the Mom Zone

Because I Said So: Life in the Mom Zone, by Annie Oeth

“But whyyyy?”

“Because I said so.”

It’s the answer that rolls off the tongues of mamas from all over. In Because I Said So, veteran mama Annie Oeth tells of the worries, laughter and sheer terror of being a mother. Trips to the emergency room, college graduations and the dangerous combination of teenagers and fireworks are all fair game in this romp through southern motherhood. Spilling the (jelly)beans on Easter egg hunts, Santa Claus and frogs in mailboxes, Annie Oeth writes of life, love and raising children while hanging on to her sense of humor.
