Creative kids have fun, learn and earn

Cool program for creative, articulate kids (ages 8-11) who are comfortable expressing themselves in a group of peers and also to adult facilitators-and most importantly-who would really enjoy checking out early stage TV shows and sharing their ideas and opinions (typical monthly: $200). This does not lead to auditions/acting roles. Click http://touchstoneresearch.3uu.us/uc/FunPaidProject/.
Note: Families and kids have fun and earn money at Panelpolls.com – http://touchstoneresearch.3uu.us/registration.php?SES=MjI4.

Before I was a Mom
I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn’t worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom
I had never been puked on.
Pooped on.
Chewed on.
Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom
I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn’t want to put him down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom –
I didn’t know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn’t know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn’t know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.
Before I was a Mom –
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache,
the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn’t know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“TACTILE” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: mouthing and tasting (and smelling), touching, discriminating textures and shapes.

THE ‘CRITICAL WINDOW’ during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for the “TACTILE” sense is prenatal to 5 years.  The more opportunity children have for positive Tactile experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

MORE Tactile tidbits:

*  BE AWARE for cues that Baby wants to take a break from touch or touch exploration.

*  SINCE EVERYTHING goes in her mouth, give her objects for holding, exploring and playing (about 1¼” or larger) that don’t have sharp edges and that are too large to swallow.

*  WHEN HE’S ready for solid foods, for a while stay away from whole nuts, whole grapes and pieces of hot dog – these can be hard to chew and be a choking hazard.

*  From 1 year, explore different tastes, temperatures and colors in foods.

FACT: THIS YEAR ALONE, in the U.S., more than 5 children a month under the age of 12 have been killed by guns that were improperly stored and secured

All of these deaths were avoidable. When parents store their guns safely, they dramatically lower the chance of accidental shootings and suicides in their homes. But more than two million American children live in homes with unsecured guns. The Talk Project is a program that puts life-saving information in the hands of over 500,000 Southern California elementary school families-printed materials available in Spanish and English that help parents and caregivers talk with their children about guns and, importantly, help parents and caregivers talk with their friends, neighbors, and family about guns and safe gun storage.

Queen and Ben Elton’s “We Will Rock You” At the Ahmanson Theatre

The long-running, West End smash hit musical Queen and Ben Elton’s “We Will Rock You” is set in the future on a planet once called Earth that is now controlled by a big corporation. Computer-generated music reigns, no rock music is heard, all musical instruments are banned and conformity is enforced. A pair of young renegades, Galileo and Scaramouche, dare to break free and bring the power of rock back to the people. The “rock theatrical,” which is built around 24 of Queen’s biggest hits, delivers a show that boasts the scale and electrifying spectacle that marked the band’s legendary live performances.
