Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“TACTILE” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: mouthing and tasting (and smelling), touching, discriminating textures and shapes.

THE ‘CRITICAL WINDOW’ during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for the “TACTILE” sense is prenatal to 5 years.  The more opportunity children have for positive Tactile experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

A FEW Tactile tidbits:

*  INFANTS who receive a lot of loving touch and attention in early months become more independent, more resourceful and, less-demanding toddlers.

*  REMEMBERING Baby experiences touch all over the body, some sensory discrimination textural surfaces are silky satin, nubby wool, towels, rough/soft blankets, fluffy toys, straw mats and sticky, smooth and bumpy surfaces.

*  BE ALERT for cues about what kinds of touch and how much she likes. If she turns away or cries, it’s time for something else.

More about touch: need for touch, deprivation consequences, importance of touch to brain development, touch therapy including massage. http://www.babysensory.com/Downloads/TouchEN.pdf

Next week – Tactile, Pt. 5

Traditional, from Ina. Walnuts, pine nuts (okay sub walnuts), garlic, basil, olive oil, s&p, Parm. Makes 4 cups.
