Play and Grow Smart-er Tips Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books. “TACTILE” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: mouthing and tasting (and smelling), touching, discriminating textures and shapes. THE ‘CRITICAL WINDOW’ during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for the “TACTILE” sense is prenatal to 5 years. The more opportunity children have for positive Tactile experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run. A FEW Tactile tidbits about research with premature infants: * Gently massaging 3 times a day for about 15 minutes helped preemies gain weight, gain weight faster, be more alert and cry less. * Massaged infants were released from the hospital sooner than those not massaged. * Low lights, skin-to-skin holding/touch and nearness to the mother’s heart are likely to improve growth and save medical costs. * Preemies may have increased bone mineral density with massage. * Moms who massage their babies likely have less depression and less anxiety.
