See Kate Winslet in LABOR DAY for Free!

Wed., Jan. 29th at 7:30pm at Paramount Studios

From the director of Up in the Air, Young Adult, and Juno, LABOR DAY centers around 13-year-old Henry Wheeler (Gattlin Griffith), who struggles to be the man of his house and care for his reclusive mother Adele (Winslet) while confronting all the pangs of adolescence. On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry and his mother encounter Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin), a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help, who convinces them to take him into their home and later is revealed to be an escaped convict. The events of this long Labor Day weekend will shape them for the rest of their lives.

Screening seats are limited. To attend, please email LaborDayRSVP@paramountpictures.com with your information.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY: “Vocabulary” development is 2 years through adult. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 8 tidbits for building a strong foundation for reading and literacy:

By 3 years old, Toddler learns more about the community while increasing vocabulary.

*  Through conversation, any trip can become a learning adventure –

* walk in the neighborhood.

* visit the library.

* go grocery shopping.

*  Zoo animals –

* visit the zoo to see the animals in their living environments.

* read stories about animals.

* draw the animals (fat primary crayons).

* make animal creations out of clay.

Next week – Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 9
