Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY: “Vocabulary” development is 2 years through adult. The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 4 tidbits for building a strong foundation for reading and literacy:

FROM 30 – 36 months,

*  TODDLER’S vocabulary explodes up to 300 words.

*  TRUE conversations begin – maybe 2 or 3 sentences.

*  HE STRINGS nouns and verbs together to form complete (simple) sentences such as “I go now,” “Play ball” and “Want drink.”

*  EXPAND her knowledge of words and sentence structure by letting her hear the correct order and correct grammar – when she says “Me want,” you say “I want, too.”

*  DON’T DEMAND that he imitate you; for example, if he says “More juice,” model, saying “Adam wants more orange juice. I want more juice, too.”

Next week – Language/Vocabulary: “Vocabulary,” Pt. 5

At times, it can be difficult to notice when we have officially gone around the bend.

Developed by Dr. Jane Scott, a Board Certified Pediatrician and Neonatologist, the Tortle beanie is an FDA-cleared patented Class medical device that promotes proper head and neck movement which is essential for appropriate development.  Tortle helps prevent and treat early stages of flat head syndrome: plagiocephaly (the flattening of the baby’s skull) & torticollis (unbalanced neck muscles).
