Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

DEVELOPMENTAL Skill Definition, “LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY:” developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY: NATIVE LANGUAGE, RECOGNITION OF SPEECH” development is birth to 5 years. The more opportunity children have for positive Language/Vocabulary experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

Some “NATIVE LANGUAGE, RECOGNITION OF SPEECH” Pt. 1 tidbits:

*  TALK TO BABY all the time.

*  EVEN IF you don’t think you’ll be understood, talk to him.

*  WHEN TALKING to Baby, resist the temptation to coo and babble – speak well, and she will speak well.

*  WHEN TALKING to Baby, look at him when you talk to him; he wants to copy your mouth.

*  GOOD TIMES to talk to Baby are during diapering and feeding.

Next week – Language/Vocabulary: “Native Language, Recognition of Speech,” Pt. 2

Fine cookie crumbs mixed with vegetable (or coconut) oil, water, powdered sugar, processed to a paste AKA ‘spreadable cookies.’ Use on toast, bagels, pancakes, muffins. Try topping your cookie butter with fresh sliced bananas. Best flavor choices are chocolate chip, Snickerdoodle, pecan sandy, gingersnap. Make it vegan, GF, nut-free. Add some to a banana bread recipe.

Tips to raise readers and keep them reading

Really good ideas from moms for creating early literacy for

…babies/toddlers (bedtime/naptime reading, nursery rhymes, library),

…preschool (picture books about princesses/big trucks, label your house, ask questions),

…early elementary school (‘just right’ books, read menus/signs/magazines),

…elementary/middle school (read in bed, create/join a book club),

…high school (resist commenting on kids’ book choices, know what’s popular – think Harry Potter/Hunger Games, your library’s book blog for teens).
