“Neva” at the Kirk Douglas Theatre

June 11th-16th

In a politically charged, haunting look at theatre and the revolutionary impulse, writer/director Guillermo Calderón’s “Neva” takes audiences to St. Petersburg in 1905. Anton Chekhov’s widow, the actress Olga Knipper, is huddled with fellow actors in a dimly lit rehearsal room, while striking workers are being gunned down by the tsarist regime in the streets outside. Chile’s Teatro en el Blanco’s Spanish language production of “Neva” was one of the highlights of the Radar L.A. festival in June 2011. Center Theatre Group, in collaboration with South Coast Repertory and La Jolla Playhouse, presents the West Coast premiere of the English translation of “Neva” as part of DouglasPlus.

Cooked

Michael Pollan’s latest book, Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation, surveys how fire/water/air/earth transform plants and animals into food. Interview excerpts cover “convenience ” and “bonding with your kids over cooking.” There’s a link to his views on cooking as a spectator sport. Good basis for discussions with your Jr. Chef about how we interface with that which sustains us.
