Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

DEVELOPMENTAL Skill Definition, SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness.

THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “Social/Emotional: Social Attachment” development is birth to 18 months. The more opportunity children have for positive social attachment experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Social/Emotional skill development:  *  stuffed animals  *  dolls  *  objects involving photos  *  puppets  *  cars and airplanes  *  play figures  *  art materials  *  musical instruments  *  household/realistic toys  *  costumes  *  keepsake products  *  games involving 2 or more players

Some “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: SOCIAL ATTACHMENT” tidbits:

*  MOTHER IS Baby’s first playmate and favorite person. It’s crucial to develop a parent-child bond of supportive interactions that create building blocks toward strong psychological and neurological development.

*  A SECURE attachment begins with a loving tone, a calm face, easy breathing, lots of skin to skin contact, a nurturing look, and a gentle touch.

*  MOM, REMEMBER to give Dad equal/quality time! And Dad, remember to give the Baby equal/quality time.

Next week — “Social/Emotional: Social Attachment, Pt. 4”
