Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

More SKILL DEVELOPMENT tidbits, 5-year-olds:

*  Developing physically through running, jumping and hopping, Kindergartener learns action words.

*  Attention span increases, as does overall muscle control.

*  Games that teach left-right directions are good now.

*  Consider lessons like swimming, ice skating, roller skating.

Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an object and at 2 years, for example, she’s ready for different features of the same toy.

*  Some DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 5-year-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

GROSS MOTOR outside toys (tactile, visual, auditory, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, fine motor, gross motor, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning) –

… launching toys: plastic discs, rockets, water-filled shooters

… objects that shoot water

… tricycles, scooters

… toys that have a target: ring-toss, bean-bag-toss, kick balls (invitations to practice math and science concepts)

… balls, of course! Large and small for throwing and kicking; individual and early team activities (skill development and cooperation; not emotionally ready for competition; only use bats with supervision)

Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 5-year-olds, Pt. 5”

Young children use your actions to know what you like

From a ‘published’ paper, preschoolers can tell what people like from actions they observe and why people are doing what they do from watching what people are doing. This ability = passing along culture and figuring out how to succeed in social groups.
