Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points , 12 mo. – 18 mo.
• Toddler is very interested in the consequences of her actions, and because her memory isn’t well developed, she won’t tire of repetition.
• Look for toys that imitate daily life since your child also likes to try out what he sees adults doing.  Remember, you are modeling “being appropriate and being civilized” to your child every hour of every day.
•  Play involves lots of experimentation like “what happens when I drop this ball?”
•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an item and at 2 years, for example, she’s ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 12- to 18-month-olds and the developmental skills utilized:

• PAIL/shovel – in sandbox/at park, fill and dump/fill and dump (fine/gross motor, creativity, visual, math/logic, thinking/learning)

• BUSY boards – for crib/playspace/car with noises/finger manipulations (fine motor, creativity, visual, auditory, language/vocab, thinking/learning)

Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 12- to 18-mo-olds, Pt. 2”
