For all of my friends within the Las Virgenes Schools We need your help. Most of you received a letter from T.H.E. Foundation yesterday asking for your assistance. For those of you who haven’t heard of T.H.E. Foundation, it’s a new educational foundation for Las Virgenes Schools that is committed to closing the gap between the funding Sacramento provides for public education and what we need. The more I heard about our budgetary situation, the more concerned I became. The facts are alarming. California ranks 46th in the nation in the amount of spending per student, and Las Virgenes falls below that number! And the future is bleak. From everything I’ve seen, we may hobble through the 2012-13 school year, but 2013-14 will be a really bad year for us. Class sizes will rise, more furlough days will be added and counseling programs in the upper grades will be jeopardized. I know this is nothing new. For years we’ve heard these doom and gloom messages, and then somehow the district finds money and we’re all ok. It’s the boy who cried wolf every year. But the gig is up. I truly believe we are in trouble. But I also believe we are a community that can rally together and fix this problem. T.H.E. Foundation is working to inform our community of what is happening and to raise money. This is an issue for every community member, not just parents. We believe that when a school district is healthy and strong, people want to live here, property values remain high, businesses flourish and everyone benefits. Over the last couple of weeks you should have received the first of a series of communication pieces–a brochure and a letter from T.H.E. Foundation with more information.
