Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points , 6 mo. – 9 mo.
•  Baby’s play is becoming more vigorous – picking up a spoon now, he bangs it against pots and pans and furiously rattles a bunch of keys.  He now grabs 2 toys at once and slams them together.
•  Movements are becoming more precise, and thanks to growing dexterity, she can pick a raisin off the floor.
•  He is becoming more aware that objects still exist even when he can’t see/feel them.  Since he’ll miss a favorite stuffed animal if he can’t see it, he’ll try to search for it.
•  Begin playing hide-and-seek games with objects – hide her teddy bear while she’s looking, and she’ll find it right away – and be very proud she did.
•  Build your “LEARNING LIBRARY” by choosing developmental learning tools, designed to “grow” as children grow, with features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in 1 toy, so Baby learns developmentally at 3 months with an item and at 2 years, for example, he’s ready for different features of the same toy.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 6-month-olds to 9-month-olds and the developmental skills utilized:
•  ACTIVITY Rattles – investigation /sensory stimulation: bright colors for teething, spinning, peek-a-boo, mirror and bead soundmakers (tactile, fine motor, gross motor, creativity, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)

•  BOARD Books – for mouthing/drooling (plastic, heavy/thick cardboard); to develop an ear for the cadence of language, vary the pitch of your voice using accents, singing and vocalizing; let her flip the pages and “read” to you (tactile, fine motor, creativity, visual, auditory, lang/vocab, thinking/learning)

Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 6- to 9-mo-olds, Pt. 2”

Most of Us Are Here Against Our Will

A strikingly accomplished debut story collection about love, loss, sex, and survival in the hard heart of Texas. Peopled with reluctant porn stars, failing actors, a misguided cheerleader, a vengeful writer, and many others, these nine stories are, according to Bret Easton Ellis, “direct, emotional, and compulsively readable.” Mary Gaitskill has said “they are about an engaging variety of nuts and sluts, and you actually read them wondering what is going to happen next. Levinson’s talent is as big as the state he’s writing about. I’m a big fan.” And Edmund White has called Levinson’s world “acetylene hot. There’s something as raw and frightening and egotistical in these men and women as in Homeric heroes.”
