Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Sunday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
THE CRITICAL WINDOWS during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Musical Development is 3 – 10 years.  The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Musical experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Musical development:  * musical instruments  * rattles and other toys for making rhythmic sounds  * items that create gentle, rhythmic sounds  * play phones  * toys that jingle, squeak, chirp, click, snap, ring  * any technology that plays music  * singing toys
GENERAL “MUSIC” TIDBITS:
*  FROM 30 MONTHS….
    ** listen to Toddler’s spontaneous singing and repeating songs or nursery rhymes over and over.
    **  encourage him to reproduce his rhythms by clapping or by tapping a metal pie pan or loaf pan with a wooden spoon.
*  IN THE 3RD YEAR….
    ** try some music lessons geared developmentally to 3-year-olds.
    ** record her singing, and let her dance to her own music.
    ** for more fun, sing and dance in costume.
    ** substitute his name or a familiar location for names in a song, like “Old Joey Levinson Had a Farm,” or “Old MacDonald Had a Bedroom.”
Next week – “Music, Pt. 7”   ?s to msmarm@roadrunner.com
