On Location: Art at the End of the Frontier Romance Gallery
It continues to expand the chronology & art history lessons of the Romance Gallery by showcasing the emergence of regional art colonies as the perceived source of a new & authentic American art. A 20th-century phenomenon, artists’ groups such as the Taos Society of Artists organized & collaborated in an attempt to find new sources of art & identity and to define themselves in relation to the industrial east, Modernism & the waning frontier. They created new definitions of place that continue to shape the economic, social & political realities of these same locales. This exhibition includes works by prominent New Mexico and California artists, including Maynard Dixon, Ernest Blumenschein & Georgia O’Keeffe.
