Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“TACTILE” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: mouthing/tasting, touching, discriminating textures and shapes.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for the “TACTILE” sense is prenatal to 5 years.  The more opportunity children have for positive Tactile experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects in addition to the human touch) for the TACTILE sense:
· teethers  · rattles  · gentle scents  · plush toys  · plastic rings  · sorters and stackers  · sand and water toys  · activity centers  · safe toys in differing shapes, textures, densities and measurements  · household objects for sensory experiences (supervised) like soft material (i.e. boas, silk scarves, feathers), plastic pot-scrubbers 
Some general Tactile tidbits:
.. INFANTS who receive a lot of loving attention in early months become more independent, resourceful and less-demanding toddlers. 
.. BE ALERT for cues about what kinds of touch and how much Baby likes, and be aware for cues that he wants to take a break. 
.. Some sensory discrimination textural surfaces are silky satin, nubby wool, towels, rough/soft blankets, fluffy toys, straw mats and sticky, smooth and bumpy surfaces.  From 1 year, explore different tastes, temperatures and colors in foods. 
.. SINCE EVERYTHING goes in Baby’s mouth, give her objects for holding, exploring and playing (about 1¼” or larger) that don’t have sharp edges and that are too large to swallow.  When she’s ready for solid foods, for a while stay away from whole nuts, whole grapes and pieces of hot dog – items like these can be hard to chew, might get caught going down and be a choking hazard.
