(1963) Play and Grow Smart-er Tips Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books. “TACTILE” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: mouthing/tasting, touching, discriminating textures and shapes. THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for the “TACTILE” sense is prenatal to 5 years. The more opportunity children have for positive Tactile experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run. A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects in addition to the human touch) for the TACTILE sense: teethers • rattles • light, gentle scents • plush toys • plastic rings • sorters and stackers • sand and water toys • activity centers • safe toys in differing shapes, textures, densities and measurements • household objects for sensory experiences (supervised) like soft material (i.e. boas, silk scarves, feathers), non-abrasive plastic pot-scrubbers. Some general Tactile tidbits: LIKE ANY OTHER sense, the tactile sense needs adequate amounts of stimulation for a child’s overall healthy development. This is especially important during the 1st year, where exploration about new worlds, warmth, closeness, and affection can be experienced and enjoyed. Babies learn about the world through their skin, so parents can provide lots of personal contact and toys that have interesting surfaces. Initially, infants explore intensely with their mouths; after all, taste is part of the tactile sense. Then come more complex forms of touch. Palms of the hands and bottoms of the feet are also well developed prenatally. IN RESEARCH with premature infants, it was shown that gently massaging them 3 times a day for 15 minutes helped them gain weight, be more alert and cry less. These infants were released from the hospital sooner than those not massaged. Also, low lights, skin-to-skin holding and nearness to the mother’s heart are likely to improve growth and save medical costs.
