Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: developing communications skills; articulating thoughts, feelings, needs; speaking, listening, reading, comprehending, writing, and spelling. The Critical Window during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY” development is broken into 3 areas:
— NATIVE LANGUAGE, RECOGNITION OF SPEECH: birth to 5 years
— SECOND LANGUAGE: birth to 10 years
— VOCABULARY: 2 years through adult
The more opportunity children have for positive language/vocabulary experiences during these critical periods, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Language/Vocabulary development: · puppets · talking teddy bears or other stuffed animals · books, books, books · sing-along tapes/CDs· tapes and games for listening/phonics skills · homemade books · writing activities · creativity kits · reading software
Some general Language/Vocabulary tidbits:
· THE ABILITY to understand spoken language and express one’s thoughts, feelings and needs are skills that start to develop as early as babbling.  By mimicking and emulating adults, children develop more complicated language skills.
· LATER ON, the use of language is more fully expressed through reading, writing, math, spelling and other academic subjects.  The ability to communicate and articulate thoughts becomes increasingly significant as children begin to make new relationships and explore their own personalities.
· WHEN articulation and sophistication in language finally become a match for thoughts, offer toys that feed the desires to babble, listen, read and express – the beginnings of literacy.
· LISTEN TO, talk to and read to children.  Expose them to books with irresistible illustrations, lively patterned language, humor and memorable stories and poems. (The developing brain likes the lilt and rhythm of poetry).
Next week – “Language/Vocabulary: Native Language, Recognition of Speech”

DOES YOUR CHILD NEED TESTING?
Many parents ask this exact question on a daily basis. Often they are referred by a school administrator or teacher to have their child tested. However, they have not been told what kind of testing is necessary and by whom. Consequently, it is often a confusing and frustrating process that leads to a delay in the student not receiving necessary accommodations and interventions. Therefore, Dr. Stein provide parents with a free 30 minute phone consultation to answer their questions and to clarify the various options that are available. You can call 818-789-5035 or email Mark@steinpsych.com for more info. You may also visit www.steinpsych.com.
