Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: EMPATHY, ENVY” development is about 2 years – 9 years.  The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
More SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: EMPATHY, ENVY tidbits:
—  PLAY BOARD GAMES that require cooperation and taking turns, and give opportunities to calmly resolve conflicts.  Remember, don’t place too much emphasis on winning – doing is still more important than winning at this age.
—  HELP your child understand and cope with strong feelings by giving her words to use when she is angry.  “I can see you are SAD about going home, ANGRY at your friend….”
—  PROVIDE opportunities for him to play in small groups to help him learn to make rules and play simple games.  Observe how he plays with other children.  Teach him to request, bargain, negotiate, and apologize.
