Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: EMPATHY, ENVY” development is about 2 years – 9 years.  The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
More SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: EMPATHY, ENVY tidbits:
·· AROUND 3, talk, pretend and discuss feelings a lot – feelings Toddler has and feelings others have.  Being able to pretend you are someone else is the first step in understanding others and being able to get along and share.
·· YOUR CHILD is gaining a deeper understanding of how she should treat other people by your modeling, so if you want her to grow up to become a kind and helpful person, make sure you treat others, especially her, that way.
·· CLOSE TO 4, he is beginning to reason and try new things, but reasoning takes practice, so be patient with some of the strange notions he insists are right.
Next week – “Social/Emotional: Empathy, Envy, Pt. 3”

Remember sitting on a phonebook as a booster when you were a kid?
This adorable and wonderfully designed booster seat is great for kids over 3 that have graduated to the big kid chair, but can’t quite see over the table. Extremely light, so even the little tyke can carry it, plus you never have to worry about it falling off the chair and smashing toes like those clunky plastic seats. Designed with indentions for your child’s behind makes for more comfortable sitting. And cute “Family Circusesque” illustrations of “kidtown” and ads for sitting make it much more kid-friendly than the regular yellow pages.
