Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: STRESS RESPONSE” development is birth to about 3 years.  The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
More SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: STRESS RESPONSE tidbits:
— FEELING IMPORTANT fosters “emotional competence” (self-motivation and the abilities to stick to a task, to understand others, to build trusting relationships, to cope with stress, and to manage strong feelings — developed by hugs rather than stern words, by patience and warmth, by mirroring appropriate modeling and by success experiences).  Your child feels important when you look at and respond directly to her, listening to what she has to say, and answering her questions.
— MANY TIMES a tantrum is a demonstrable cry for attention.  During a “control” tantrum, keep calm.  You can say, “I know you feel really angry when that happens.”  Don’t let him have what he wants just because he’s screaming.  Put him in a safe place where he can’t hurt himself.  (When you’re in a public place like a mall/market, if possible, take him to an enclosed place like the car.)  Let him calm down, then hug/comfort him.  (Spanking and yelling only makes him angrier.  He will calm down on his own.)  When he’s quiet, help him change his attention to an activity he likes.  In time, with supportive modeling, he will learn other ways to deal with anger.
