Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “Social/Emotional: Social Attachment” development is birth to 18 months.  The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
More “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: SOCIAL ATTACHMENT” tidbits:
ABOUT HUGGING and cuddling Baby –
·  HUGGING AND changing her position once in a while, hold Baby often, cuddling and rocking her.  Smile and talk to her in a soothing way while you sing, dance, rock, read or talk.  Always touch, hold and move gently.
·  HOLD HIM WHEN he needs to be held.  Don’t be afraid this will “spoil” him – when you care for and respond to him, he will likely be less demanding during the toddler years.
·  BEING HELD and cuddled frequently is extremely important in the development of her sense of self-worth and security.  Holding and cuddling her is also a great stress release for an adult!
Next week – “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: STRESS RESPONSE” Pt. 1

NOVEMBER Annual Sales
Put fresh batteries in your smoke detectors. Reuse old batteries from those detectors in other devices such as a TV remote control. These old batteries will run for a long time; you just should not trust your life to year-old batteries.
Do all Christmas shopping by Thanksgiving. You can get better deals before the hectic days of Dec. and you will avoid the crowds.
Turkeys are often inexpensive. Buy several and freeze.
Check all doors, windows for drafts. Clean your furnace and change filters. This is a good time to clean windows so they let in more light and even clean light bulbs, lamp shades and light fixtures so that you get the maximum light.
You also might consider putting long-lasting and efficient fluorescent bulbs in dark hallways and stairways and leaving them on most of the evening.  The energy cost will be minimal and the light will help prevent falls and accidents in these accident prone areas.
Tune your car before winter starts. Do a winter automobile check up. Get antifreeze early; the price always goes up in the winter.
TYPICAL ANNUAL SALES: Shoes, boys clothing, blankets.
MAJOR PURCHASES TYPICALLY ON SALE: Appliances, used cars.
TRAVEL: November is a great time to go to Florida when it is often a good bargain and less crowded.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: apples, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cranberries, endive, grapefruit, grapes, lima beans, mushrooms, parsley, rutabagas, winter squash, turnips. NOTE: With some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten when fruits and vegetables are really fresh. Buying in season means that these items are often cheaper, fresher, taste better and that money may be going to local farmers.

2 Beagle-Dachshund Mixes Need a Home
Yolie is 11 pounds and is 1-2 years old.  She has the markings of a black and tan beagle. She was spayed yesterday. Michelle is less than one year old, 50 + days pregnant with three puppies and weigh’s 14 pounds. They are named them after the guards who fed them where they were found. They’re both about the size of a shorter, heavier dachshund and are sweet as can be. They both are great with people including kids and have completely ignored the cats they’ve been around since rescued. Yolie can be with other dogs, however although Michelle seems healthy but because she is so far pregnant, she can’t be spayed and because she is pregnant at all, she can’t get her shots. With no shots, no one with dogs has been willing to house her. If you know of anyone who would be willing to adopt or foster her, especially one who would be willing to help along the puppies’ birth and growth till they are weaned, Ellen, who found them, would be grateful. Please email her at EReissRD@aol.com ASAP
