Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: bonding, building relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for “Social/Emotional: Social Attachment” development is birth to 18 months.  The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
More “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: SOCIAL ATTACHMENT” tidbits:
·  MOTHER IS Baby’s first playmate and favorite person.  A secure attachment is created by the loving tone of Mother’s voice, the positive set of her mouth, the easy pace of her breathing, the warm feel of her skin, the nurturing look in her eye, the gentle touch of her hand.  This crucial parent-child bond of supportive interactions creates building blocks toward strong psychological and neurological development.  Remember to give Dad equal time!
·  TAKE CARE OF Baby’s needs immediately – respond to his cries, feed him when he’s hungry and change his diaper when he’s dirty.  This way you help him trust, feel safe and be confident.  As he gets older, feeling secure encourages him to try new things.  Be consistent so he knows what to expect.  Contrary to one old-fashioned belief, taking care of Baby’s needs immediately WILL NOT spoil him!
Next week – “SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL: Social Attachment” Pt. 3

Calendar Listings for January and February 2011 at Center Theatre Group’s Theatres

Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winner Lithgow offers a touching and humorous reflection on storytelling as the tie that binds humanity in “Stories by Heart.” In this piece he traces his roots as an actor and storyteller, interspersing his own stories with two classic short stories that were read to him when he was a child. Lithgow imparts the wonder and joy he felt when he first heard Wodehouse’s “Uncle Fred Flits By” (1935), a funny story about a nephew taken on an afternoon’s escapade by his mischievous uncle, and Lardner’s “Haircut” (1925), a darkly comic tale told by the local barber about a small-town practical joker who gets his due. Opening is set for January 5, 2011 at the CTG/Mark Taper Forum.  Information for all three venues can be found at
http://www.centertheatregroup.org/  or call the box office can be called at 213-628-2772.
