Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of ‘Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,’ has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
·  There is REAL value in turning pages and reading together.  (tactile, auditory, visual, language/vocabulary, social/emotional, fine motor, creativity, life skills, thinking/learning)
LEARNING TO READ, PART 3
The following skills and strategies will help your child build a strong foundation as an emerging reader.  Read with your children!
THE NEXT SET OF SKILLS NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT READING/LITERACY INCLUDES AWARENESS OF PRINT, LETTERS, WORDS AND SPELLING PATTERNS.
A CHILD WILL
·  RECOGNIZE the alphabet and learn the names/sounds of the letters by their prominence in the story or the text itself.
·  NOTICE patterns (st-ick, k-ick, l-ick) and use rhyme to predict the next rhyming word.
·  BEGIN to write her own name, labels or lists; support her in making early attempts of ‘transcripts’ of her own speech.
·  PAY attention to the shapes of letters, words and common features among words (words that start or end the same), and find matches with the letters in his name.
·  PREDICT an unknown word by sounding out letters (left to right), looking for clues in the illustrations or thinking about meaning/context and asking herself, “Does it sound right?” or “Does it make sense?”
·  SELF-CORRECT when she decides a guess isn’t quite right and tries again using a combination of the context, the way it looks and sounding it out.
REMINDER  —-  Don’t be judgmental about the pace of your child’s abilities – it is totally WITHIN NORMS for children to read before 4 years old OR even as late as in the 8th year.  It’s all in how an individual’s brain is ‘wired’ as to when Mother Nature turns the switch on to be able to decode alphabet letters (symbols) into sounds, then sound patterns into meaningful words.  Brain development-wise, reading is COM-pli-ca-ted!
