Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of ‘Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,’ has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

·  Play becomes discovery and Kindergartener learns rapidly through play.
·  He begins playing “Let’s pretend.”  Not lying, but being creative, he tells wonderful and exciting tales about things that adults know are not true.  Humor him! 
·  Build your “learning Library” by choosing developmental learning tools designed to “grow” as children grow, that have features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in one toy.  This way, Baby learns developmentally at 6 months old with an item, and at 3 years old, Toddler is ready for different features of the same toy.
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS OPTIONS for 5-year-olds, Pt. 2:
·  BOOKS – Appropriate books for Kindergartener include those with rich, descriptive language, simple factual books, books that pose questions and storybooks that can be easily acted out.  Since she notices everything, find books that offer detailed illustrations and stories about the wonder of nature, warm relationships and imaginative situations.  (fine motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, visual, auditory, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
·  AUDIO MATERIALS – Using your favorite recording device, record your voice speaking and singing to your child, and record him speaking and singing; an opportunity for imaginative/dramatic play.  Perhaps you set up a creative “call and response;” soothing assurance if mom/dad are away.  (social/emotional, life skills, creativity, auditory, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
