PlayandGrow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
Tidbits about 24- to 30-month-olds
•  Now 2, Toddler has become even more “assertive.”  The defiance really results from the tug-of-war between her desire for independence and her continuing need for help. What she’s doing again and again is testing her limits.
•  Along with independence comes expanded language skills.  Speaking in short sentences, he has become more purposeful, telling you what he needs or wants.  He’s also starting to understand abstract concepts, asking for more milk and inquiring about whether he can go to bed later, but he still doesn’t understand what next month or next year means.
•  Fantasy play emerges.
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools (toys and other objects) options:
•  SORTING/classifying/counting toys – pre-reading/pre-math skills (tactile, fine motor, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
•  CLAY/play dough – squeeze/squish/pound/knead/poke/roll/shape with rolling pin/cookie cutters/spoon/straw/toothpicks/garlic press (tactile, fine motor, creativity, visual, thinking/learning)
•  AUDITORY A-B-Cs/1-2-3s – singing/listening and exposure to musical instruments helps “first learning” sink in (creativity, auditory, language/vocabulary, music, thinking/learning)
Next week – “Developmental Learning Tools for 24-mo- to 30-mo-olds, Pt. 2”. Any ?’s – email msmarm@roadrunner.com
