Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books. 

•  Begin conversations about classifying and categorizing.  Set out shoes/socks and silverware, for example.  Ask, “What do we eat with?  What do we call that?  What do you wear?  Where do you wear it?”

•  Now, he learns easily from unstructured play, so just make toys available, and he’ll take off.

•  Build your “learning Library” by choosing developmental learning tools designed to “grow” as children grow, that have features and developmental skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in one toy.  This way, Baby learns developmentally at 6 months old with an item, and at 3 years old, she’s ready for different features of the same toy.

•  BATHTIME activity centers – an adventure in math/science: scooping/pouring/splashing/balancing learning volume, weight, flotation, logical reasoning, cause/effect (tactile, fine motor, life skills, creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)

•  MOVING toys – big wheeled toys that crank/rev/beep/steer/roll/ping/choochoo for release of exuberance and fantasy (gross motor, social/emotional, creativity, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)

•  MUSICAL/Rhythm toys (tactile, auditory, gross motor, fine motor, creativity, social/emotional, math/logic, music, thinking/learning)

•  JACK-in-the-Box (tactile, auditory, visual, social/emotional, music, thinking/learning)

•  FINGER Paints (tactile, visual, fine motor, creativity, thinking/learning)
