Play and Grow Smart-er Tips

Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.

“TACTILE” DEVELOPMENTAL SKILL DEFINITION: mouthing and tasting (and smelling), touching, discriminating textures and shapes.

THE ‘CRITICAL WINDOW’ during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for the “TACTILE” sense is prenatal to 5 years.  The more opportunity children have for positive Tactile experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.

A FEW Tactile tidbits:

*  LOTS OF Tactile stimulation during the 1st year (warmth, closeness, and affection) is key for a child’s overall healthy development.

*  BABIES experience, enjoy and learn about the world through their skin, so provide lots of personal contact as well as toys with interesting surfaces.

*  MOUTHS are key to exploration (lips and tongue/taste).

*  PALMS of the hands and soles of the feet are well-developed prenatally.

Next week – Tactile, Pt. 3
