Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Since 2010 Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving weekly tips from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points and Learning Tools, 3-year-olds:
*  PRESCHOOLER can practice gross motor
movements by imitating animals while you dialog
    descriptive words about the movements:
    –  hop like a frog or bunny,
    –  wiggle like a snake,
    –  tiptoe like a bird,
    –  waddle like a duck,
    –  run like a deer,
    –  gallop like a horse.
(tactile, visual, auditory, gross motor, creativity,
          social/emotional, language/vocabulary)
*  HAVE fun with silly, zany music.
    –  Twist a familiar song by substituting Preschooler’s
          name, objects, places, for example.
.. “Alex Johnson had a little lamb” or “Mary
              had a little dog,”
.. “The wheels on the puppy go ’round and
              ’round,”
.. “The itsy bitsy gorilla went down the
              waterspout.”
    –  Invite Preschooler to make her own crazy
          substitutions.
    –  This is a good time for making music/noise with
empty oatmeal canisters and a wooden spoon.
    –  Remember the wonderful music resource of your
          neighborhood public library!
(tactile, visual, auditory, fine and gross motor,
          social/emotional, creativity, life skills,
          language/vocabulary, music)
*  PLAY IS a child’s work!
Q: What do we mean by Developmental Skills?
A: (in no special order) tactile, visual, auditory, gross
and fine motor, social/emotional, creativity, life skills,
    language and vocabulary, math/logic
    (thinking/learning) and music.
