Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Since 2010 Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving weekly tips from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities.
SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for 12- to 18-month-olds; developmental skills noted:
*  WASHABLE crayons and paper –
    –  tape paper to the floor and offer Toddler only 1 or
          2 crayons (no more is necessary at this age).
    –  put “art” on your fridge at your child’s eye level.
    –  start practicing “tell me about your picture.”
       (fine and gross motor, social/emotional, creativity,
          thinking/learning, tactile, visual,
          language/vocabulary)
*  BALLS – always balls!
    –  large and medium (nothing marble-sized yet),
    –  smooth and textured,
    –  cloth, rubber, wood, etc.
    –  start with rolling back and forth (throwing with
          muscle development and control comes later)
       (tactile, visual, gross and fine motor, social/
          emotional, thinking/learning, language/
          vocabulary)
Q: What do we mean by Developmental Skills?
    A: (in no special order) tactile, visual, auditory, gross
    and fine motor, social/emotional, creativity, life skills,
    language and vocabulary, math/logic
    (thinking/learning) and music.
*  BEGIN to build a “learning library” of “developmental
    learning tools” designed to grow as Baby grows:
    –  consider choosing toys (Learning Tools) with
          multiple features and developmental skill
          elements that stimulate Baby AND (your future)
          Toddler AND Preschooler;
    –  ex. Baby may stack 2 blocks at 6 mo, and make
          structural creations with lots of blocks later.
