Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Since 2010 Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving weekly tips from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT points, 12- to 18-month-olds:
*  USING her legs now, Toddler enjoys games and
    activities that are full-body-involved, like
    –  hide-and-seek.
    –  dancing.
    –  going through, around and over an obstacle
course of pillows, chairs and sheets.
      (tactile, visual, auditory, gross motor,
        language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
*  SOME developmental “learning tools” are
    –  balls, all kinds,
    –  swings,
    –  push-and-pull toys.
(tactile, visual, auditory, gross and fine motor,
        language/vocabulary, life skills, math/logic,
        music)
*  BEGIN introducing
    –  sorting – find and put in a container
      .. shoes, later socks.
      .. blocks.
      .. stuffed animals, etc.
    –  nesting – objects like
.. multiple sizes of plastic cups,
.. bowls that fit into bowls that fit into bowls
         (no glass, please).
.. boxes that fit into boxes that fit into boxes.
(tactile, visual, fine motor, life skills, language/
     vocabulary, math/logic)
Q: What do we mean by Developmental Skills?
A: (in no special order) tactile, visual, auditory, gross
and fine motor, social/emotional, creativity, life skills,
    language and vocabulary, math/logic
    (thinking/learning) and music.
*  BEGIN to build a “learning library” of “developmental
learning tools” designed to grow as Baby grows:
    –  consider choosing toys (Learning Tools) with
      multiple features and developmental skill
elements that stimulate Baby AND (your future)
      Toddler AND Preschooler;
    –  ex. Baby may stack 2 blocks at 6 mo, and make
structural creations with lots of blocks later.
