Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” developmental skill definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Math/Logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development: water, sand, objects that can be taken apart and put back together, toys involving problem-solving, games, clay, objects involving counting forward and backward, toys with various shapes/colors/sizes, blocks, puzzles, objects that can be matched/classified/categorized, objects that nest.

repeating 1 – 6 over and over with each page of “1”
objects (of “2” objects, etc.) having different pictures.
.. “read” the whole book at least once a week, pointing
to the pictures saying, “1 kitty,” “1 flower,” “2 socks,”
“2 eyes,” etc.
* “ALPHABET” or “LETTERS” book:
.. encourage him to draw letters of the alphabet and
draw objects which start with the same letter
(a = apple/asparagus/apricot, b = balloon/ball/boy).
.. use lower case letters (because we use lower case
letters more frequently, and 2/3 of the printed upper
case [capital] letters have a different shape than the
lower case letters).
.. introduce a new letter each week and add it to a

top down (rather than from bottom up) and “a,” “d,”
“g,” “o,” “q,” “6,” “9” and “0” to be formed counter-
clockwise (better brain-development-wise as it
parallels the way Westerners read – left to right).
