Classroom innovation helping kids improve focus and reduce anxiety
Research shows that kids learn better when they aren’t forced to sit still, glued to a desk or chair for hours on end during a school day. But can they actually fidget, squirm and wiggle their way to better grades in a classroom? And can they do it in a way that’s not disruptive and promotes productivity? Bouncy Bands are heavy duty rubber straps that attach to the legs of student desks that allow the kids to lightly bounce their feet and stretch their legs as a way to release their extra energy, anxiety, and boredom during the day while working quietly in a classroom. The Bouncy Bands come with support pipes that keep the bands suspended at the perfect height for kids’ feet to rest and bounce.

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of “Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain Development, Birth through Five,” has been giving tips to aid your child’s optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities weekly on Jen’s List since 2010. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
“MATH/LOGIC” developmental skill definition: recognizing and understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming and understanding concepts, matching, classifying, categorizing, reasoning, problem-solving, strategizing, organizing ideas.
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most heavily wired for Math/Logic development is 1 – 4 years old. The more opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing Math/Logic experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Math/Logic development: water, sand, objects that can be taken apart and put back together, toys involving problem-solving, games, clay, objects involving counting forward and backward, toys with various shapes/colors/sizes, blocks, puzzles, objects that can be matched/classified/categorized, objects that nest.
MORE PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities, 24 – 36 months:
*  BEGIN to reinforce “colors:” recognition, matching,
    naming.
*  ENCOURAGE messy play – every time mud squishes
through fingers, brain synapses are developing –
.. use water, sand, mud, clay.
.. mix, sift, pour, stir, shape.
*  HAVE FUN on a plastic tablecloth
       (play with your food!):
.. set out DRY beans (garbanzos, red kidney or white
beans,) and dry rice (IF Toddler has stopped
          putting things in his mouth),
.. set out different sized unbreakable containers like
cups, bowls, pots, plastic containers, oatmeal
          canisters, etc.
.. set out a sand or kitchen scoop or 2 and a large
          spoon or 2,
.. identify and compare shapes and colors of beans
and containers, and dump and fill, dump and fill,
.. in time, classify and categorize from mixed beans:
            – red beans in 1 container, rice in a 2nd
                    container, garbanzos in another, etc.
            – 1 scoop of red beans in the blue bowl, 2 scoops
of white beans in the stainless bowl, etc.
