National Safe Boating Week

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 22 children under the age of 13 lost their lives while boating in 2013. And, 36 percent of the children died from drowning. In most cases, parents will ensure their children are wearing life jackets, but feel they themselves don’t really need one. Consider the rules we hear every time we fly. Put the oxygen mask on yourself first so you can help your friend or loved one. The same is true for life jackets. You can’t save your child if you don’t save yourself first. Accidents on the water can happen much too fast to reach and put on a stowed life jacket. Drowning is the reported cause of death in three-fourths of all boating fatalities and 84% of those who drown are not wearing life jackets.

Which is best for society? Academic preschools/kindergartens OR play-based classrooms?

Studies are in. Long-term effects of the type of preschool attended are seen later in adult behaviors, patterns of personal responsibility and positive or negative social behaviors. You decide for your own family: choose “achievement and getting ahead” which translates to self-centered values vs. the ability to “plan activities, play with others and negotiate differences” which develops into lifelong pro-social and emotional characteristics.
